The Biblical meaning of the name Roman is “strong and powerful”.
There are many types and ways of being strong and/or powerful. So
Roman may be a big muscled up hunk of a man, a very powerful
and influential business man and he could still be a boy wondering
and struggling with becoming a man of any kind. But here we will
deal with the Spiritual aspects of power, strength and might.
In the Bible there is a power spoken of that we don’t usually use in
our average day to day lives. This is the power we receive when we
are saved and also when we are baptized in the Holy Spirit. The
Greek word used here in the bible is from which this power is derived
is Dunamis and it is not just any power; the word often refers to
miraculous power or works. It is also the word from which the words
dynamic and dynamite come.
All this to say that Roman is here to be a really strong person, to
perform some powerful thing or and maybe fulfill some miraculous
function. Roman may live a somewhat boring humdrum life, no
different than most of the men you meet. But that would be like
judging a book solely on the book’s cover if what you see on the out-
side is the only indication of what is on the inside.
Maybe the greatest thing Roman will ever do is lead someone to the Lord
after the Lord has set up the time, place and opportunity for him to
do so. Call that chance if you like but when you find that this sort of
thing happens in Roman’s life a lot you might think differently.
Sometimes Roman will slip a few dollars to someone who desperately
needs a hand up at that particular time. Maybe Roman works at a
soup kitchen making sure he looks at the people in the eye as he
ministers to them so that they know that he regards them simply as
himself in another pair of shoes at a hard time.
And then Roman could be that influential business man, muscled up
hunk of a man or simply the boy searching his way in this life. But it
is certain that when he looks to the Source of All Power, Jesus Christ,
and receives that Power to do His Will he will indeed in God’s eyes be a
most powerful man.
Acts 1:8 “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit
comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem,
and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth
